The Spiel des Jahres is a German commision that awards three prizes each year for some of the best board games of the past year. Yesterday, they announced the winners for this year for their Spiel des Jahres, Kennerspiel des Jahres, and Kinderspiel des Jahres.
The first and probably most important price that has been awarded is the Spiel des Jahres 2018 or game of the year 2018. This price has been given to the tile-drafting game Azul. Azul is a game in which players compete to collect tiles that in turn helps them to complete their own mosaic. The player who can get the best tiles and so the most points wins the game. The game has a very unique way to divide the tiles each round and has really nice components which makes this a deserved winner of this award.
Die Quacksalber von Quedlinburg is the game that takes the title of Kennerspiel des Jahres this year. This is the price for the more strategic and medium to hard games.
In Die Quacksalber von Quedlinburg players take on the role of potion makers in the middle ages who try to make the best potions. Every player has a bag with their ingredients and every round they can draw ingredients from this bag until they think their potion is finished or the potion explodes. Points, upgrades, and money are awarded for each potion and now players can go to the market to buy more and better ingredients for the next potion.
The last award category is the Kinderspiel des Jahres or the best children's game. This year the price has been awarded to Funkelschatz or Dragon's Breath in English.
In this game, all players are small dragons that have discovered an ice tower full of gems. However, you are not big enough yet to breathe fire to release the precious gems, so you have to ask the help of your father to melt the ice layer by layer. The little dragons have to choose a color of gems beforehand so make sure you take a good look at the pilar before guessing. The player who collected the most gems is the winner of the game.
