Best Board Game Releases and Announcements in 2023 | Tabletop Games Recap

The last year saw designers and game creators working hard to bring out a selection of superb tabletop games. From new trading card games to expansion packs for fan favourites, 2023 was full of exciting (and occasionally accidental) announcements. Here is a selection of a few popular tabletop games that made their debut in the last year.

Star Wars: Shatterpoint

Atomic Mass Games has a plethora of Star Wars and Marvel miniature games. In 2023, they graced enthusiasts with an entirely new battleground game in this category known as Star Wars: Shatterpoint.

This game allowed fans to play in teams to complete various mission objectives in a race against time. Players can choose their squad of heroes, modelled on the animated Star Wars series from the 80s. This skirmish-style game came out in the summer of 2023 and reviews have said it has been a ‘very good foundation’ with a ‘very impressive design’, so we can’t see sales slowing down in 2024.

 

Warhammer 40,000: Leviathan Box Set

Where would we be without Warhammer? This staple in many board game fanatics' game cupboards got a new addition in 2023. The set included 70 reimagined Leviathan Space Marine and Leviathan Tyranid models and this impressive set is undoubtedly one of Warhammer 40k’s best sets to date.

Warhammer 40,000: Leviathan was announced as the 10th edition of Warhammer 40,000 at Warhammer Fest in April 2023.

 

Descent: Legends of the Dark - The Betrayer's War

After the original set for Descent: Legends of the Dark quickly became a Fantasy Flight Games bestseller, they didn’t hold back in the second act of this fan favourite Descent: Legends of the Dark – The Betrayer's War.

This cooperative game shared some similarities to the original. However, there were new characters and challenges to navigate to keep players on their toes during this game, which came out in the latter half of 2023.

 

Disney Lorcana: Rise of the Floodborn

On December 1st 2023, Disney graced all tabletop game enthusiasts and Disney fanatics with the ultimate second edition to their initial Disney Trading card game.

Disney’s second release Disney Lorcana: Rise of the Floodborn was an accumulation pack to compliment any existing Disney Locana decks you own. However, you can also play Disney Lorcana with just the cards from the Second Chapter of the game.

Although this set would have been the ultimate Christmas gift for the holidays of 2023, we believe the longevity of the Disney stories will see the First, Second and subsequent Chapters of Disney Locana stay popular for the foreseeable future.

 

Star Wars: Unlimited TCG - Spark of Rebellion

Gear up for March 8th 2024 so you are ready for the release of Fantasy Flight Games’ new Star Wars theme trading card game Star Wars Unlimited. You can expect to understand how to play this innovative new TCG in the first instalment of this game, also known as ‘Star Wars: Unlimited - Spark of Rebellion’.

 

Heat: Pedal to the Metal - Heavy Rain

Let’s not forget the award-winning driving game Heat: Pedal to the Metal which was released in 2022. And then we first heard about the expansion pack Heat: Heavy Rain after it was accidentally leaked by a Spanish retailer in 2023.

Originally, the expansion pack was expected to come out in February 2024. However, we now have confirmation that the new expansion known as Heavy Rain is out for pre-order from January 2024 and will be released around the very end of March 2024.
