878 Vikings is a zone control game in which 2 to 4 players take on the role of invading Vikings or English noblemen trying to resist the invasion.
Viking players control the Northerners, the Viking freemen, and the Viking shock troops known as the Berserkers. The English control the king's Housecarls and the Thegn noblemen who own land.
Players on each side work together to coordinate their strategies. The English start the game by controlling all of England, but the Viking players invade from the sea to strike at the heart of English territory! Players decide when they want to start the end of the game, using the Wedmore Treaty.

The “Age of the Vikings” expansion adds several new scenarios, game components, and victory conditions to the 878 Vikings game, such as Christian churches, pagan remains, Viking settlements, holy sites, and much more!
