Product Description
Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion is a fully stand alone and cooperative campaign game of tactical combat set in the same unique fantasy world as its predecessor. Players will assume the roles of 4 new hardened mercenaries and work together to fight through a new prequel campaign full of choices, challenges, and twists. New built in tutorials, Learn-to-Play Guide, and play-surface scenario books allow players to jump into the action more quickly and easily than ever before. Playable as a stand-alone game or as an expansion to Gloomhaven.
From the manufacturer
A stand alone game that precedes the events of Gloomhaven
The game includes four new characters — Valrath Red Guard (tank, crowd control), Inox Hatchet (ranged damage), Human Voidwarden (support, mind-control), and Quatryl Demolitionist (melee damage, obstacle manipulation) — that can also be used in the original Gloomhaven game.
Hereos are invited to investigate mysterious disappearances within the city
Is it the work of Vermlings, or is something far more sinister going on?
Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is aimed at a more casual audience to get people into the gameplay more quickly. All of the hard-to-organize cardboard map tiles have been removed, and instead players will play on the scenario book itself, which features new artwork unique to each scenario.
The last barrier to entry — i.e., learning the game — has also been lowered through a simplified rule set and a five-scenario tutorial that will ease new players into the experience.
- 1 - 4 players
- 30 - 120 minute playtime
- Ages 14+
About the game
- 16 monster types (including seven new standard monsters and three new bosses)
- New campaign with 25 scenarios

The game is a slightly simplified version of the full Gloomhaven game.
It does a great job simplifying the game in multiple ways.
1. You play on the actual book, instead of putting together cardboard map pieces. Also the book includes objects identified on certain spaces. This saves an incredible amount of setup time. It takes so long in the original game to set up all the map pieces, the doors, the rocks, the water hexes, etc. This eliminates all that!
2. It actually teaches you how to play the game while you are playing it. You start off with simplified versions of the cards. As you play through the scenarios, you replace the simplified cards in your hand with the actual cards that you will continue with throughout the rest of the game. It is so easy to play through AND learn the game as you are doing it. There are quite a few learning scenarios included. By the time you are through those scenarios, you are ready to play the actual game.
This is a MUST for any person interested in D&D or other rpgs. You get to create and level a character, gaining experience and new abilities, acquiring new items and developing strategies to get you and your party through the scenarios. There is normally no permanent death (unless you choose to play that way) - your character just gets "knocked out".
An incredible amount of fun! Easily worth the price!
The new character added is fun, especially for a strategist. The only thing that might slow you down is that the scenario details take longer to understand. That is the trade off when you get creative with your goals. I'm happy to say that Forgotten Circles is a great bang for your buck.
Gameplay: It's basically playing an RPG video game but somehow this one manages to immerse you into this fantasy world that you will not even noticed that 3 hours have just passed. You can also buy from Forteller games the fully narrated scenarios which adds an additional level of immersion, I really recommned it. The first scenario took me 3 hours to complete (including setup) since the rules will guide you step by step on what you need to do and there is a lot to read but they introduce a few mechanics at a time so that you get a good grip of the game first. There is a map that you can use to keep track of the game scenario that you are playing and also you can "save" your game by keeping the cards corresponding to the character in a separate bag. There are items in the box that are sealed and can't be opened until you reach certain event in the story which I consider really exciting.
Components: All components are of high quality. The miniatures are extremely high detail. The scenarios are beautifully designed.
Pros:
+ Great Story
+ Rules are extremely well done, the rule book will guide you step by step without feeling overwhelmed
+ Companion app "Forteller games" which narrates the scenarios with great detail (sold separatedly but completely worth it)
+ Attention to detail on every corner, on the miniatures, drawings, character and enemy designs, scenarios, etc.
+ Mystery items that are sealed and can't be revealed until reaching an event in the story.
Cons:
- Takes around 20 mins to set up
- Each playthrough will take easily from 1 - 2 hours for 2 players.
- (Not fully a 1 player game) For a solo game, you manage 2 characters which adds to difficulty of managing things.
- The stickers can't be removed from the map (removable stickers sold separatedly)
Positives
+ Good product for the price that is cheaper than Gloomhaven while offering a good experience.
+ Once you learn the game (they have a sponsored walk through) the game is intuitive, fun, and challenging.
+ The game teaches you how to play it while you start the first few levels.
+ They supply multiple minis and value added tokens.
+ The game has lots of uses as a standalone game, a tutorial for Gloomhaven, and a expansion for Gloomhaven.
Negatives
- The setup and break down is very time consuming.
- The first few levels can be a bit confusing.
- Playing with multiple groups is very difficult.
- The product has uses bags to store and organize the product leading to wear and tear on tokens. I suggest 3d printing organizers or buying one.
- Specific card sleeves for certain cards and it limits the use out of the box. (square monster cards don't fit with some sleeves into their envelope)
Overall it's a good product for the price that requires some investment in time to fully enjoy.
Top reviews from other countries
Add extra pkayers at any time or just play with 2 or 3 of us as usual. We bought the reusable sticker map to go with it. Advisable! It's fun because it's such a long game so it keeps going!!
It's so very easy to learn with the step by step instructions too.
Delivery was fast and good like most of the time.
