Gen Con is one of the largest board game conventions in the United States. This year's edition just wrapped up last week, so it is time for us to find out what the hot newest games are that were announced or released at the event.
Let's start with one of the most anticipated games of the year, Brazil: Imperial. In this worker placement, strategy game players explore the land, build cities, produce resources, and trade to be the best monarch in the region. Will you score points trading resources and expanding your city and workers? Or will you invest in military power and steal the goods your opponents make? This 4X game gives you limitless opportunities to build the most thriving settlement.
Gutenberg is a game by the same publisher as Brazil: Imperial, Portal Games. In this game, players become pioneers of the printing press in the 15th century. You will try and set up a profitable business by accepting printing orders. However, the supply of ink and letters to press is limited so make sure you will be able to complete it on time.
The game has unique elements such as a network of gears that determine what actions or resources you get on your turn. Strategically placing these gears can give you many advantages, but placing these correctly to get the desired benefits is harder than it looks.
For the younger players among us, CoraQuest is a great introduction to the world of adventuring! In this cooperative dungeon crawler, you go on the hunt for treasure while defeating monsters, avoiding traps, and sometimes rescuing a gnome called Kevin. This game is optimized for children ages 6 and up with simple iconography and funny drawings, perfect for a family gaming night.
Northgard: Uncharted Lands is a game we have been waiting for for a very long time. Here you are the leader of a Viking clan on their way to explore and conquer the world. Your mission is to conquer the most promising regions on the board and so gather the most fame. To do this you gather resources such as food and wood to increase your numbers. More warriors will allow you to explore and attack more neighboring regions and so win the game.
One of the most aesthetically pleasing games this year has to be Ejército de Terracota. This game brings amazing miniatures to the table representing statues that the players will build.
In this game it is the task of all of you to be the most talented craftsmen and build a terracotta army for your emperor. You will have to position your statues in the correct positions, upgrade your workers and gain favors from the Emperor's advisors to score the most points in five rounds of sculpting.
