Board game holiday gift guide 2018

12 Dec 2018 by Jerodev

It's almost time for the holidays and that means time for presents! And of course, nothing is more fun to give than a new board game that can be played with friends or family members in this cold season. That's why we have listed the games of this year that, according to us, fit best under the Christmas tree.

Chronicles of Crime

Chronicles of Crime is a detective game in which one to four players will solve a mystery for Scotland Yard. The box contains cards with several suspects, clues and locations on them. Each card also has a QR code. The story is created using an app on your smartphone or tablet. You can scan the different QR codes to question the suspects, research clues or move to locations. One player will have to be the narrator who has to read the dialogs aloud from the screen.

What makes this game really fun is the discussions on what exactly to do next. You will have to debate on who to interrogate, where to look for clues or what paths you want to research further. Every action takes an amount of time and if you take too much time, special events may occur that make your case even harder to finish.

De Kwakzalvers van Kakelenburg

Would you rather brew questionable potions and try to sell them at the market? Then you should really give The Quacks of Quedlinburg a try. Every player gets his own cauldron to create special potions. In turn, players can draw ingredients from a bag on the table and add this new ingredient to their concoction. But be careful, if you add too many peas to you cauldron, your brew may explode and you will have to start all over again! If you think your potion is profitable, you can go to the market and try to sell it. With the money this gets you, you can buy better ingredients which can make better potions and score you more points.

The game challenges you to grope the boundaries of your luck. It's really exciting to try and make the best brew while seeing someone else's potion explode in their face. The Quacks of Quedlinburg has also won the 2018 Kennerspiel des Jahres this year, one of the most know board game prices!

Dice Settlers

In Dice Settlers, you are tasked with colonizing a new found area, but there are other teams on the map who also want as much land for them as possible. Everyone gets their personal bag of dice for which you can draw a number of dice each turn. After throwing each of these dice, and possibly modifying them, you can take the actions depicted on the dice turn by turn. You could explore more land, increase your power on existing tiles, harvest valuable resources, raid the settlements of other players or research new technologies.

Players can choose where to put newly explored tiles and the tiles are always drafted in a random order, this makes it so that no game is ever the same. The game stays exciting until the last round because everything can change by the roll of a dice!
