The first Kickstarters of 2018

The first half month of the year has already passed and it was very calm for the board gaming world. But by now some really nice Kickstarters have been released with great ideas and beautiful artwork. We already took a look at what this first month of 2018 will bring for Kickstarter games.

When opening the website, our attention went directly to a game with wonderful artwork, Everdell. Everdell is a worker-placement game in which players place their animals in the forest to collect resources to build better buildings in their own growing town. This can be done by playing building cards from your hand that grants immediate bonuses or new places to send your animals. At the end of the game the player who scored the most points, by finding the perfect balance between collecting resources and building his town, is the winner! This game was greatly inspired by other worker-placement games such as Stone Age and Agricola.

The next game (or actually: games) that appealed to us is The Tokio Series. The Tokyo Series is a collection of games that can be played separately, but that can also be played all together. Every game is made around about a special cultural element from the city of Tokyo. There is a game about the metro and stocks, another game about the special architectural buildings and the third about Japanese vending machines and drinks. These are the first three in a series of twelve games that will become available through Kickstarter later this year. Each game in these series contains very nice miniature elements in their theme. There is a mini vending machine and bottles in different sizes and colors for the drinks game. A lot of building pieces to build buildings in the architectural game and an entire metro map with wooden components for the metro game.

A thrid game we find very interesting is Deja Vu: Fragments of Memory. In Deja Vu: Fragments of Memory all players are cosmic spirits that float around in parts of the universe. You are each trying to reconstruct the memories of a girl by collecting "Fragments of Memory" that are scattered in the void. By collecting these fragments you unlock new abilities that allow you to find new worlds you can visit. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins the game. The game contains playing cards with beautiful illustrations for each separate world and contains nice wooden components that represent the fragments of memories.

A last game that looks great to us this month is Western Legends. In Western Legends, each player, as a citizen of the far west has the choice to become as fair as the best sheriff or to become the most feared outlaw! Players can explore an open sandbox world full of events in which they can gamble, prospect for gold, rob the bank, fight bandits, pursue stories, become an outlaw and much more. While you do all of these activities, you build your character and try to collect as many goals as possible because that is how you win the game! The game contains unique miniatures for every character in the game. The game has also got several card decks for actions, stories, items, and goals among others. The game board is a western style map that is divided into different regions where you can find different events and actions.
